Snipword Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 19, 2026

In short: Snipword has no account, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. Your words and notes stay on your devices and in your own iCloud. The developer never receives them. The only thing that leaves your device is a short word you look up, sent to Wiktionary for a definition — and you can turn that off.

What Snipword stores

The words and notes you save (the text, its translation and definition, your note, tags, colour, the app or web page it came from, dates and quiz progress) are stored on your device. If iCloud is on, Apple syncs them to your other devices through your private iCloud database. The developer has no access to your iCloud data. Turning iCloud off for Snipword keeps everything on that device only.

Translation

Translations use Apple's Translation framework and run on your device. Language files are downloaded from Apple the first time a language pair is used. Snipword does not send your text to a translation service.

Definitions and Wiktionary

Definitions come from your device first (the Mac's Dictionary, or Apple Intelligence where available). If neither has one, Snipword can look up texts of up to four words on Wiktionary (the English edition, or the German, Spanish, French or Italian one for words in those languages): the word is sent over an encrypted connection to the Wikimedia Foundation's public API. Nothing else is sent — no account, device ID or other text. Wikimedia's handling of these requests is described in its privacy policy. You can turn this off in Snipword › Settings › Definitions › Look Up Online Automatically.

A saved word's Look Up Online links (web search, Wikipedia, Wiktionary, images) open in your browser only when you tap one; that page then follows its own privacy policy.

Clipboard

Snipword reads the clipboard only when you ask it to: when you tap Paste in the app, or run the "Snip Text" shortcut after copying. To offer the "You copied some text" button, the app only checks whether the clipboard contains text, without reading it.

Safari extension and Share sheet

The Safari extension shows a Snipword button when you select text on a web page. It reads only the text you select, and only when you use it. When you save, the page's title and address are stored with your snip so you can find it again. The extension does not record or send your browsing. The Share extension receives only the text you choose to share with it.

Pronunciation

Reading words aloud uses your device's built-in voices.

Purchases

Snipword Pro is a one-time in-app purchase handled by Apple. The developer does not receive your name, payment details or Apple Account.

Children

Snipword collects no personal data from anyone, including children.

Your choices

You can export or back up everything (Settings › Your Data), delete individual snips, or delete all of them at once. Deleting removes them from all your devices synced through iCloud.

Changes and contact

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date. Questions: snipword.app@gmail.com
