Frequently Asked Questions

How do I import books?

Tap the + button on the bookshelf toolbar, then select PDF or EPUB files from your device, iCloud Drive, or other file providers. You can also add monitored folders that automatically import new books.

How do I scan a physical book?

Tap Scan on the toolbar to open the barcode scanner. Point your camera at the book’s ISBN barcode (usually on the back cover), or tap Enter ISBN Manually to type it in. The app will look up the book’s title, author, and cover from Open Library.

How do I restore my purchase?

Go to Settings (gear icon on the bookshelf) and tap Restore Purchase in the Pro Status section. This will restore your Lexifolio Pro unlock on any device signed in with the same Apple ID.

Where is my data stored?

All data (library, dictionary, annotations, reading progress) is stored locally on your device. Nothing is uploaded to any server. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

How do I delete my data?

Which file formats are supported?

Lexifolio supports PDF and EPUB with full native reading. Books in other formats (MOBI, DJVU, CBZ, CBR, FB2) are cataloged and opened via the system viewer.

How do I set up translations?

Go to SettingsLanguage Pairs to configure your translation languages. You can add up to 5 language pairs (e.g., English → German, French → German). Set one pair as active — this determines the translation direction when you save words from the dictionary or reader. Translations use Apple’s built-in Translation framework and work offline once language packs are downloaded.

How do I look up word definitions?

There are two ways to get definitions for saved dictionary words:

How do I back up my data?

Go to SettingsBackup & RestoreExport Backup. This creates a .lexifolio file containing your dictionary, highlights, reading positions, sessions, monitored folder names, and ISBN-scanned books (with covers). Save it to Files, iCloud Drive, or any location you choose. To restore, tap Import Backup and select a .lexifolio file. You can also restore from the empty library screen when reinstalling the app. Scanned books reappear on your shelf, and you’ll be reminded to re-add your monitored folders.

Do I need an internet connection?

No. The app works fully offline. Internet is only needed for ISBN barcode lookups (Open Library), online word definitions (Wiktionary), and optional Cloud API summaries (OpenAI, Gemini, or custom). On-device AI summaries, dictionary definitions, and translations all work offline.

What happens if I delete or move a book file?

Lexifolio only adds new books when scanning folders — it never automatically removes books from your library. If you delete, move, or rename a file outside the app (e.g., in Files or iCloud Drive), the book will still appear on your shelf but won’t be able to open. To clean it up, tap the book and choose Delete to remove it from your library. Your dictionary words, highlights, and reading sessions from that book are preserved.

What is the free trial?

New users get 7 days of free access to all Pro features (Dictionary, Annotations, Quiz, Statistics, AI Summaries). After the trial, you can unlock them permanently with a one-time purchase.
